For many people a TiVo box has pride of place in the living room, but I don't think it crossed many peoples minds to stick a TiVo in the bathroom.

*Unless you already have any form of visual impairment. In fact, I wear glasses and I'm pretty sure I can still see more pixels than would fit on a 1080p screen, so for legal purposes, I'm going to say that this asterisk voids any real commitment to upgrade/downgrade your vision after tasting a mint.

I trekked up to New York for Digital Life, and all I got was this bag of goodies from TiVo. But what's mine is yours -- or at least, it could be.

Here's the deal. Up for grabs we have a package including:

• 1 TiVo plush toy (good for kids, sticking in your cubicle, or watching your dog chew apart)
• 1 TiVo KidZone lanyard
• 1 tin of TiVo HD mints (in case you're tired of standard definition mints)

Sounds great, right? But I bet you're asking "how do I win such a fabulous prize?"

Easy, all you have to do is review the site and pick your favorite post from the month of October, then leave a message in the comments section for this post. In a week or two we'll randomly select a winner from the entries and send you the swag bag stuffed with plunders from the TiVo booth at Digital Life.

Fine print: Only one entry per person, Weblogs Inc. freelance staff and AOL employees are not eligible. There can be only one (winner), and our decision is final. All entries must be submitted by 5:00PM Friday, October 20th.

Just a week after Netflix announced a million dollar prize for anyone who could come up with a better system for recommending movies to users based on their past rental patterns, more than 8-thousand teams have signed up.

And as of this morning, three of them have already come up with programs that are more reliable than Netflix. The $1 million prize only goes to a team that can improve Netflix's system by 10% or more, and nobody's achieved that goal yet. But it has only been a week.

I'm guessing most of the programmers at Netflix don't earn anywhere near $1 million a year. So either this contest demonstrates that "crowdsourcing" your work will result in the best and the brightest coming together to make a better product, or you just need to pay your programmers better if you want them to produce. I'm going to go with the first one for now, I'm feeling like an optimist today.
