Over on Jason Calacanis' site, he implies AOL blogs need a million monthly page views for it to be worthwhile. PVRWire is one of several which are being shut down at the end of the month.

The truth of many blogs is that a huge percentage of traffic comes from search engines. Divester, PVRWire, etc have amassed a great deal of content which will continue to make AOL a little money and drive traffic to other sites after they've been "shut down" - yet they will have no ongoing monetary outlay for talent/writing and no management overhead.

I think the lesson is long-tail, niche blogs may have a hard time being justified and surviving in a corporate environment.

I'll miss reading PVRWire and the opportunities I've had to collaborate and contribute. Since Chris, Brad, Matt, and JJ joined Martin last summer the writers have done a great job expanding coverage and quadrupling monthly page views.

13. Yesterday I read about this happening to Divester and now today PVR Wire. This just sucks. I also notice that DigitalMusic Weblog has not been updated in a week, but no announcement. What about AdJab, is that going too.

I can't wait to find out where ya'll go. I might have to rethink all of weblogs blogs if they are going to start disappearing.

15. That really is too bad. PVRWire has always been one of my favorite sites. Everyone involved has done such a great job of tracking this industry and in a very entertaining way. I'm sad to see it shipped off to join AOL in the Time Warner graveyard. Best of luck with your new endevours.
