Niveus plans to launch a dual CableCard receiver for use with Windows Media Center PCs by the end of the month. Why does this matter? Well, Microsoft's been promising CableCard compatibility in Windows Vista. But nobody's managed to successfully put together a CableCard compatible machine yet. That means if you want to use a PVR to record cable television signals without a cable box, you're options are pretty much limited to a TiVo Series3 at the moment. And if you're looking for a way to record high definition TV on a Vista machine, you're petty much limited to recording over-the-air broadcasts.
According to Ce Pro, Niveus has only tested the external receiver with high-end Niveus Media Center PCs, but theoretically the box should be compatible with systems from other manufacturers.
