One of my favorite things about a home built PVR is that you can set up a system to automatically compress recorded shows allowing you to save a whole heck of a lot more space on a hard drive. The hard drive I store most of my recordings on is 250GB, and I've got hundreds of hours of video stored, even though it's only half full right now.Well, Hitachi doesn't want you to have to degrade your video quality to save space. They're preparing to launch a 1 terabyte had drive early this year. It'll go for $399. And at my estimation, if you were to slap this puppy into a TiVo Series3 you'd be able to record about 1300 hours of standard def TV (at basic quality) or 130 hours of hi-def TV.
Hitachi's Deskstar 7K1000 drive will be on display at CES next week.
Seagate is also working on a 1TB hard drive, but it remains to be seen which company will get one to market first.

1. yay! Cheap storage for all! A year today, hopefully, a TB will be $120ish, and we can all go media nuts
