Widevine Technologies Inc. has announced that it has been awarded a patent that will detect and fight video piracy on the internet. The technology is described as being able to protect copyrighted content from being recorded after the video has been downloaded and decrypted and before it has been played. Normally a viewer could use a number of available applications to record the content.
This leads me into another grey area of the law. It's perfectly fine for us to record content onto a PVR from a TV and watch it whenever we want, but now this right is being taken away on the internet.
I can understand where this might have legitimate use such as for movie rentals but what about on internet TV channels that are similar to regular channels or other video sharing sites? Are we not allowed to timeshift or store that video?

1. Perhaps the difference between internet and pvr is that you paid for the content on your television.
