John Martellaro of MacObserver had a chat with Nick Chakalos, the Senior Director of the Software Product Management Group at Motorola (who our very own Dave Zatz interviewed back in October). During the conversation some interesting points popped up about PVRs.- Motorola has built branded PVRs for Comcast, Cox, Time Warner, Charter and Starchoice in Canada delivering over 6 million units in total.
- Motorola did not license PVR technology from TiVo but in fact licensed it from ReplayTV (this I did not know).
- Nick says that multi-room viewing is okay with content providers as it falls under fair use within the household (although a couple of things makes me believe otherwise). Nick also says using something like a Slingbox is a different story.
- Motorola is working on a Networked Attached Storage (NAS) as a way to add storage space to PVRs.
