I recently touched on using peer to peer technology for video download and rental services when I covered Peer Impact, one of the few, if not only peer to peer video rental service on the net.
Now Microsoft is learning a lesson in the difficulties of delivering downloadable video to consumers when they handle all the bandwidth themselves. Downloads speeds are slow and very unreliable which is damaging the reputation of its service.
Gizmodo has pointed out a simple p2p scenario that would allow Microsoft to offer much higher download speeds allowing everyone to win. I do wonder why Microsoft is not employing this technique.
