Well, it's official, TiVo isn't going to sit still while companies like Apple and Microsoft work at connecting your TV to online media. While Microsoft's latest Xbox 360 update lets you view downloaded and Apple's upcoming iTV will let you watch movies purchased through iTunes, TiVo's been focusing on expanding TiVoCast, which brings online clips to your TiVo.Today, they're announcing a major expansion of TiVoCast content, and several new features to allow you to get online video in your living room.
- Autotranscode - TiVo Desktop Plus 2.4 will allow users to browse, transfer, and watch web video on their TV set. The software is only compatible with Windows XP, and will convert QuickTime, WMV, and MP4 video in real-time for viewing on your TiVo. TiVo Desktop Plus 2.4 will be available later this year, and will cost $24.95. The upgrade is free to TiVo Desktop 2.3 users.
- Home Movies - You can create a private channel of content that friends and family can access using their TiVo. TiVo has partnered with One True Media to offer this service. You upload video to One True Media's website, and receive a code which you can give out to other TiVo subscribers. They'll get Season Pass to your channel, and videos will show up in their Now Playing List. This service will be available early next year. Receiving video is free, it'll cost $3.99 to sign up for a One True Media account to create a private channel.
- Celebrity guides - TiVo and ICM have partnered to allow TiVo users to get help finding programs to record. A group of actors and directors are offering Guru Guides of their favorite films and TV shows. If you sign up for a celebrity Guru Guide, TiVo will automatically record the suggestions. Available in the first half of 2007.
- Unified Search - Starting next year you'll be able to browse through broadcast, cable, and broadband content through a single search screen.
- TiVoCast - TiVo unveiled a group of new partners for its TiVoCast service.
Okay, I'm not entirely sure there's five separate bits of news in there, but TiVo did send out five news releases. Of course, they also decided to announce all five items on the same day. So I'm going to sum it up and reiterate: While Apple and Microsoft and other companies are trying to figure out how to move from your office to your living room, TiVo's already got the set-top-box, and is continuing its mission to figure out how to bring your PC-based media into your living room.
- CBS will provide sports, news, and other material, including CBS News online material with Katie Couric and material from CBS's innertube channel.
- Reuters will offer up Reuters Showbiz Week, Reuters Technology Week, and Reuters Oddly Enough: And Finally, a show covering the week's oddest news stories.
- Forbes will offer business and lifestyle programming
- Additional material from dlife, Plum TV and Nano
