PC Magazine reports DivX chief R. Jordan Greenhall has a plan to connect your computer to your TV by the end of next year, positioning DivX's as a competitor to Apple's iTV.Greenhall says Apple has it right in focusing on a way to bring PC-based media to the TV set. But where Greenhall differs from Steve Jobs is the hardware. He says consumers don't want to have to buy a special device just to move their media throughout the house. Rather, DivX is hoping to partner with the manufacturers of DVD players, PVRs, and other set-top boxes on a software standard called DivX Connected.
Greenhall says the software's been in development for about three years and should be ready to roll out in 2007.
DivX has already partnered with a number of hardware manufacturers to enable DivX support on DVD players. Greenhall says the appeal of a software standard instead of a hardware one is that consumers can pick the devices they'd like to have in their living room. He expects DivX Connected products to cost $150 or less.

1. I was discussing with a friend of mine the chance of a product that would just display the video/music we stream from our pc/laptop onto an HD tv. Apple's iTV sounds like an ideal solution, but will it be limited to purchased content? Will it support HD?
