Watch Google Video on a Smartphone

Scott Robbin Mobile Video As Joe Costello pointed out in our recent interview, you can use Orb to watch web video from sites like Google and YouTube on your web-enabled mobile phone. But what if your home computer doesn't meet Orb's pretty hefty requirements, or you don't want to have to leave your PC on all the time just to watch the occasional video at the bus stop?

Scott Robbin's got you covered. He's developed a web-based application that strips the AVI file from any Google Video and lets you download it to your phone. All you have to do is access http://srobbin.com/mobilevideo using your phone's browser, search for a video, and when you click on the link, it will download to your device and you're ready to go.

This won't work for all phones. You need:
  • An XHTML-compliant browser
  • Enough storage to hold large files
  • A fast internet connection (you can make do with a slow one, but only if you want to spend a half hour downloading a 3 minute video)
  • An application (like TCPMP or the Core Player) for watching AVI files.
Scott also has a page that explains how the application extracts AVI files from Google Video RSS feeds.

My apologies for the poor photo. I would have taken a shot of the application on a smartphone if I had one. Instead you get this blurry photo of my Dell Axim. Scott tested his application on a Motorola Q.
