Slingbox to launch Symbian SlingPlayer

Slingplayer SymbianSling Media is giving some love to the European and Asian mobile phone markets. By the end of the year, Sling plans to launch a version of SlingPlayer Mobile for the Symbian operating system. Currently SlingPlayer Mobile works only on Windows Mobile PDAs and smartphones in the U.S.

According to the press release, if you've got a Slingbox hooked up to your home system, you can use a Symbian smartphone with 3G or WiFi to watch terrestrial TV, Freeview, cable, or satellite TV. And as always, you can control your PVR with your phone.

This announcement shouldn't come as much of surprise, seeing as how the new Slingbox packaging touts support for Symbian. But we've also seen evidence that Sling will be launching another mobile client soon. So far there's been no official word on a palm version.

While Symbian smartphones aren't huge in the U.S., 82-million of them have been sold worldwide, so this partnership makes Slingplayer mobile to a pretty wide market of people who have probably never really heard of their product, and have no inclination to buy it.
