While we have all been focusing on the Microsoft Media Center and the Zune PMP, we have overlooked Microsoft's progress in providing a successful IPTV middleware solution for set top boxes. This is not to get confused with internet video on the internet like YouTube as this is a little different. In this case, IPTV is simply having the TV channels we are used to, delivered via the internet rather than cable or satellite.
Microsoft has made a middleware IPTV solution that can bring video delivered via IP, onto a TV screen through a fancy interactive front end interface. interactiveness being one of the major advantages of IPTV.
Microsoft recently made an announcement showing just how well its IPTV Edition software is being adopted. Cisco, Motorola, Philips, and Tatung are all using the new Microsoft software in their set top boxes and new PVRs.
Microsoft's IPTV Edition has both HD and PVR support as well as video on demand. Additional features include multi-room streaming and home media networking.
