Orb 2.0 beta - more Web 2.0ish

Orb 2.0

Orb 2.0 beta is out and it's all Web 2.0-like and stuff.

Basically, Orb Networks has added a ton of features to its basic placeshifting software. Orb has always let you stream photos, music, and video from your home computer to other PCs and mobile devices across the web. If you have a TV tuner in your computer, you can also watch or record live television.

Version 2.0 makes your "my Orb" page into more of a home page, with room for RSS feeds, Weather, and all sort of other widgets.

There's also new improvements to interface, allowing multiple ways to view your content online. The interfaces for the electronic program guide and the mobile client have also been updated.

And there's support for watching YouTube, Google, or DailyMotion videos on mobile phones. You can also create mobile "channels" of content and share them with friends.

Overall, it's a pretty impressive looking upgrade. But as always, Orb has some pretty hefty system requirements. My home system with a P4 2.4GHz processor just barely meets the minimum requirements. Since I use BeyondTV (which can be something of a resource hog in its own right) to record my shows, using Orb on top of that to place-shift them can make for a pretty unhappy computer at times. But if you've got a newer, more powerful system, you might want to check this out.
