Digeo, a company mostly known for providing software to cable companies for their cable boxes is preparing to release a standalone PVR by fall of 2007.The box could come under Digeo's Moxi brand, although that's not set in stone.
The box would have a multi-stream high-definition TV tuner, will use the Moxi interface, and will be capable of connecting to broadband internet connections, allowing you to stream multimedia content to your TV set. There will be some sort of optical drive, although it's not clear if it will be DVD, HD-DVD, or Blu-Ray.
Because the Digeo box will use a multi-stream CableCard, users will be able to access video-on-demand and other interactive features provided by their cable company. That's something the TiVo Series3, with its uni-direction CableCard slots can't due.
Digeo's box is expected to cost around $1,000. That puts this product, which won't be launched for another year, at $200 more than the TiVo Series3, available today. I'd rather rent this box for a few bucks a month from my cable company than spend that much money on something I'll probably want to upgrade in a few years. Still, it's nice to see someone giving TiVo a run for its money when it comes to next-generation PVR features.

1. This just states that it uses a Multistream cablecard (which is still 1-way). It does not mention cablecard version 2.0 (which will be 2-way). The 2.0 specs haven't been finalized yet.
