Microsoft unveils Zune, explains DRM a bit

Zune - brown

Microsoft officially announced its Zune portable media device today.

Here's what we know: It's a 30GB player with WiFi, a 3-inch LCD screen, and an FM tuner (not transmitter). It comes in black, white, and brown.

And what can you do with that WiFi?

"Zune lets you spontaneously share selected full-length sample tracks of your favorite songs, homemade recordings, playlists, or pictures with friends wirelessly, device to device. You can listen to any song you receive up to three times in three days. And if you like a song you hear, and want to buy it, you can flag ti right on yoru device to easily find later."

Well, I suppose it was too much to hope that when Microsoft said they wanted to build a community experience that they meant you could trade music freely.

Other highlights:
  • Zune will import existing music, video, and pictures from Windows Media Player or iTunes
  • The device can play unprotected WMA, MP3, and AAC files, as well as JPEG photos and WMV, MPEG-4, and H.264 videos.
  • The online music store will be called the Zune Marketplace -- and it's described as an online music store, no mention in the press material of videos.
  • Accessories available so far include a home a/v pack, a car pack, and a travel pack
