Put this in the "the more people hear about it and start trying it, the less likely it is to work" file, but Brant over at x-pose.org says he managed to score a free HR20-700 PVR from DirecTV.
The recently released PVR had Hi-Def output, dual tuners, and a 300GB hard drive. And it costs $400. For DirecTV customers that have already dropped the money on a TiVo, Brant has this advice -- call and complain about the cost.
"The person will likely pass you off to a higher representative and you must explain the story all over again. This DOES in fact work. We got the new dvr with a free new dish installation."
Anyway, companies have a history of offering discounts if you threaten to cancel your service, but I'm a little skeptical of anyone claiming they got a $400 freebie. But hey, it's worth a shot, right?

1. It *IS* possible. I work for Convergys and from there DirecTV. I've seen this and more happen.
