Orb Networks is following up on the Nielsen research that shows PVR users watch more TV than those without time-shifting devices.Orb allows users to stream music or movies from their computer to any other web-connected devices, including computers, PDAs, and cell-phones.
In a press release issued today, Orb claims that users spend an average of 45 minutes each day "MyCasting" their personal media. According to Orb, that compares with 31 minutes a day that the average American spends on the internet every day.
Now, I'm going to assume that Orb users are a self-selected bunch, and whether they were spending 45 minutes watching movies or listening to mp3s from their home computers or not, they'd probably be spending a lot more than a half hour on-line every day. So I'm not sure there's a clear cause and effect here.
In fact, the same could be true of the do-PVR-owners-watch-more-TV debate as well. Do people buy PVRs because they watch a lot of television, or do they watch a lot of television because they have PVRs? And do Orb viewers spend more time on-line because of Orb, or do they use Orb because they're already on-line all day?
Either way, it's a pretty impressive showing for Orb that users spend so much time with the service, so I can see why they're trying to get the word out.
