Why the Mac Mini would make for a terrible PVR

Mac MiniFollowing on from yesterday's post about why Steve Jobs didn't announce a Mac PVR recently, eHomeUpgrade has posted an article about why the Mac Mini would be terrible as a PVR.

Firstly, it's too small. A decent TV tuner is going to take up a bit of space, and the only way you're going to get it on a Mac Mini is if Steve releases a bolt-on (thereby coining him in some more money). Sure, you can get USB tuners and small external add-ons at present, but if you want multiple-channel recording, you're going to need a bigger boat, as the saying goes...

Secondly, storage. The Mac Mini boasts an impressive 120 GB hard drive, which is fine if you want to record about 60 hours of standard television, or about 20 hours of HD, if you're lucky. Storage that small would start to get frustrating after a few weeks on a PVR.

Lastly, cost. The Mac Mini might be heralded by Mac fanatics as the death knell for PCs, but it's still not cheap. The basic model is $599, and by the time you've added some of the features you want, you're up at the price of a Mac anyway, so why not just go and buy yourself a Mac -- or better still, why not just spend the money on a Windows Media Center PC or a TiVo, which are built to do the job in the first place?

I get the impression Mr Jobs has a long way to go before MCE, TiVo and Sky Plus start to feel the heat from the Mac Mini.
