eHomeUpgrade's Thomas Hawk has challenged Alex Raiano's comparison of a TiVo and a Windows Media Center PC, based on costs.Alex reckons you could buy two top-of-the-line TiVo boxes for the cost of one MCE box or purchase three lower-end TiVos for the cost of one MCE box.
Not so, says Thomas -- MCE can capture in HD, but TiVo can't; a top of the range TiVo can only record about 100 hours at high quality, whereas the storage on an MCE PC can be expanded indefintely; MCE allows audio ripping from recorded shows, TiVo doesn't; MCE can handle multiple tuners, TiVo has one.

1. TiVo costs money every month. MCE is free. TiVo is cheaper upfront, MCE is more expensive (the OS itself is $140!).
I'd go with the one without fees, myself. And the ability to do HD seals the deal. I just wish that I could do it for less than $800. Not too likely.
