PVR Wire

1. The article doesn't say whether it's a TiVo DVR or a more generic "DVR".

According to Humax's web site it looks like the latter.

Which I guess isn't surprising since it's for the European market where AFAIK TiVo doesn't play (except for the few legacy U.K. TiVo's still out there)

I'd be curious to know the differences in features between a Humax TiVo DVR and a Humax "DVR".

2. I think you're right - it's probably a generic PVR, not a TiVo-based PVR system.

TiVo have all but pulled out of the UK market, although I think legacy users can still update firmware/software etc. - but there's no EPG anymore.

3. I'm not a fan of all in one units when a TV is involved. I just hate the idea of one piece going and having to replace the whole unit, sent the whole unit out to be fixed (Thus being without TV) or having to live with a dead limb.

Also, I hate News sites that require you to REGISTER.

4. I can attest to the pitfalls of all in one units, we used to have a TV/VCR combo, when the VCR jammed we had to take it in to have it fixed because the tube, etc got in the way of the VCR internals, we were shocked when the repair bill was almost as much as a new VCR.

The second time the VCR got jammed (we had toddlers) we just bough a new, separate VCR. Of course at that point re ran into problem where we couldn't watch Disney video tapes because the Macrovision encoding was biting us in the butt (because we were watching a tape through the built in VCR). We neded up buying a SIMA copymaster device for $20 and it fixed that problem though :)
