Starting today, you can buy a 40-hour TiVo for $49.99 after a $150 mail-in rebate, indicating that the company is wasting no time in aggressively marketing its standalone boxes. You also can buy an 80-hour TiVo unit for $149.99 after a $150 mail-in rebate. The new rebate offer begins today and goes through Nov. 27.
Alternatively, you can purchase a 40-hour unit for $49.99 if you prepay for one year of service. Under this deal, there's no waiting for the $150 mail-in rebate. The offer is good through Sept. 30. The total price for the box and one year of service is $205.39.

1. Though I already own an old Replay, I've considered switching to TiVo to gain access to certain features. But I don't care if the box is free; I'm not ponying up $299 for the service! The company just doesn't have a clue about perceived value. If they sold the box for $299 and told me the service was free, I'd probably jump. As it stands, it seems like one big gotcha.
