Happy 30th birthday, VCR

Today we make a nod to the VCR, which is celebrating its 30th birthday. Yes, it was this day in 1975 that VCRs made their debut. It's been a long trip.

During that time, moviegoers have been able to watch their favorite movies at home, as the VHS tape became popular. Then DVDs overcame DVDs in sales and, finally, in rentals. Now PVRs and video on demand could grow to battle DVDs.

Places like Best Buy have stopped selling VHS tapes and they could stop selling VCRs as soon as 2010. It may not be too far down the road until a large number of consumers are storing and viewing legal movies from their hard drives, either through independent downloading services or from companies like TiVo. I can't wait.
